Even a simple workplace can be drastically improved by small changes. Simple adaptations provide the conditions for a more relieved and relaxed sitting position and as a result of this a natural movement variation that is based on your work duties.
Default settings
Based on a default setting which is slightly backward leaning (around 100-105ˇ), which equates to a position in between the raised/forward leaning and the most backward leaning position. This is the position that virtually everyone chooses to sit in when they are asked to sit as comfortably and relaxed as possible. This is the case regardless of whether it is an armchair, sofa, visiting chair, office chair or something else. This position means the body is stabilised and its weight is relieved in relation to the chair. There is virtually nobody that sits naturally in a raised, forward leaning “riding position”.
Based on this basic sitting position (which is only a starting point, not a static working posture) you adapt the remaining workplace: The height of the desk and your distance to the desk is adjusted to ensure you adopt a natural and relaxed posture with your arms and shoulders. Place your keyboard, mouse or control device on the desk to ensure your arms neither need to be stretched nor rotated outwards. The height of the screen is adjusted to ensure your vision falls naturally roughly in line with the top third of the screen. When this has been adjusted, your workplace has a good basic setting.
A good seated work place provides the option of movement without stress. When tilting backwards on a work chair with a knee-tilt mechanism (Malmstolen 4000) or a synchronous knee-tilt mechanism (Malmstolen 7000), the seat height drops slightly measured from the sitting bones down to the floor. However, your hands will be straight above the movement shaft of the mechanism, which is right under the front section of the seat. When tilting, your hands move downwards and extremely marginally upwards. Your arms and shoulders can be relaxed even when you work more forward leaning or when you lean backwards.
In an office chair with a movement shaft under the middle of your seat (central tilt mechanism) the height is altered BOTH for your hands and sitting bones. An ergonomic work chair with a knee-tilt or synchronous mechanism is therefore preferable to ensure a good adaptation of the total ergonomics at the workplace.
